Calgary RATH, Nepean Ravens and BC take home national gold

Fredericton, NB – April 6, 2013 – In an exciting overtime final, Calgary RATH put an end to Prairie Fire’s week-long winning streak at the National Ringette League championship in Fredericton. Calgary’s Amelia Hradsky scored the overtime winner, assisted by Victoria Russell and Abbey Van Roekel to give RATH a 6-5 win and the gold. Prairie Fire go home with silver and Cambridge Turbos take bronze.

"We knew we could win this," said head coach Trina Janssens. "We knew we had to work hard and we had to do it as a team and we did just that. We have never won an NRL championship and we knew this was our time."

Nat Fortin (Limoges, ON) and Brent Bunting (Barrie) officiated the NRL final.

Nepean’s Sarah-Lynne Begin scored an impressive four goals, including the winner with only 1:16 left in the game, to give the Nepean Ravens a 5-4 win over Winnipeg Magic to claim U19 gold today. The win caps a week-long winnning streak for the Ravens, who also went undefeated in their provincial championships. The Magic take home silver and Zone 5 Grit (AB) picked up the bronze.

"After going undefeated in provincials, we knew we could do it and that gave us extra strength," said Begin shortly following the win. "Every shift I told myself that it was my shift and every ring was my ring. I’ve never scored in the top corner and when I put the winning goal in that way it was such a dream come true."

Karen Meek (Bowmanville) and Amy Murray (Sunderland, ON) officiated the U19 final.

In the U16 final, BC posted an 8-4 win over Calgary Strive. Ingrid Bakke (Delta) and Dana Dunsten (Surrey) each contributed pairs in the win. Calgary Strive go home with silver and the Guelph Predators claim bronze.

JF Ethier (Blainville, QC) and David Jones (Beaverbank, NS) officiated the U16 final.

A total of 44 teams from across the country competed in three divisions – U16, U19 and the National Ringette League (NRL – 19+). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing award ceremony on Saturday night.
