Finland sweeps world club championship and awards winners

Turku, Finland – Sunday, January 1, 2011 – In an exciting overtime final, Finland’s Luvian Kiekko -82 (LuKi-82) dashed Canada’s only hope of a medal at the 2011 world club ringette championship, downing the defending world club champion Cambridge Turbos 8-7 and picking up the bronze medal. The win set the stage for a full Finnish sweep of the medals at the event, with Lapinlahden Luistin -89 (LL-89) and Raision Nuorisokiekko ry (RNK) meeting in the gold medal game. In the second overtime game of the day, LL-89 ended the tournament undefeated and downed RNK 5-4 to claim gold with Tiina Randell scoring the overtime winner. RNK will go home with silver.

Cambridge’s Emily Bakker (Mitchell) posted a two goals and two assists, while Jacqueline Gaudet (Cambridge) posted a pair of goals and three assists, earning her game MVP honours. Riikka Hayrinen picked up a hat trick, including the game winner and three assists for LuKi-82, while Kirsi Pukkila earned game MVP honors after posting two goals and three assists. Canadian Jennifer Hartley, who plays for LuKi-82, picked up a goal and an assist in the game.
