1. The final stretch before playoffs
It truly is the most exciting time of the year! The last few games are being played, final tweaks are being perfected at practice, and everyone’s in the race to get ready for playoff weekend, March 7th-8th. The Ottawa Ice team is especially eager to finish strong, as they wish to get the opportunity to defend their NRL title in Wood Buffalo, Alberta, at the Canadian Ringette Championships beginning in late March.
2. The Canada Games
They’re happening in Prince George, British Columbia, and ringette will be played from February 14th-20th. The country’s top U20 athletes will represent their respective provinces & battle it out for the coveted gold medal. The event promises to be extremely competitive and will be a fantastic showcase of our sport. Our very own athletes Carrie Lugg & Jennifer Hartley will share their expertise as coaches behind the Team Ontario bench, while Sarah-Lynne Begin will also be hitting the ice wearing Ontario red. All ringette games will be webcast, so make sure you catch at least a few and cheer on our athletes from coast to coast!
3. Outdoor rinks
Who doesn’t love a little skate in the great outdoors? It is so much fun to lace up your skates with friends and embrace this perk of winter. Needless to say, we are even more spoiled here in Ottawa with the nearby Rideau Canal and the inevitable beavertail consumption that follows! A few Ice athletes have also been putting in some extra ring-handling time on surrounding neighbourhood rinks – practice makes perfect! Is it a coincidence that this marks the season the Ferals have put a franchise-record amount of rings in opposing teams’ nets? At print time, with one regular season game left to play, the Ice has 200 goals for – an all-time high!
4. Valentine’s Day
What’s the month of February without spreading a little love? While Saturday the 14th will be the designated day for the exchange of treats and heartfelt gestures, we challenge you to spread some appreciation all month long! Tell your teammates how much you appreciate their loyalty and hard work; show your family members that you never take their devotion to your ringette activities for granted; high-five your coaches for believing in you all season long, and thank a referee for ensuring all your games (over 374 matchups in the NRL alone!) were played fairly this season.
Yes, you, the person reading this. Will you be our Valentine? Seriously, thanks for keeping up with the high pace of our team activities over the course of the entire season! We appreciate the feral support and your interest for all things purple & teal! Thank you for reading our monthly blurbs, thank you for watching us play our hearts out, and thank you mostly for your support of the fastest game on ice! You are #1 in our hearts. Xoxo
