The LMRL Thunder of the National Ringette League announced today they have signed Finnish import player Tiina Mononen for the 2012-13 season.
“Tiina is an exceptional ringette player. Her speed and skill put her in a group with the top players in the world,” said LMRL Thunder head coach Chris Wakefield. “Having a player of Tiina’s stature choosing to join the LMRL Thunder demonstrates that our program is one of the best in world.”
Mononen joins the Thunder after a successful 2011-12 season with her Finnish club team Lapinlahden Luistin 89 in which she captured the Finnish Elite League Championship and the World Club Championship. Mononen is also a member of Team Finland, having won the World Championship in 2007 and 2010.
“Playing Ringette in Canada has been my dream since I was a little kid,” said Mononen. “Ringette is my passion, and I want the experience of playing in the NRL and living in Canada. I’m always hungry for new and exciting challenges.”
Mononen will be joining her Team Finland teammate Salla Kyhälä, who the Thunder announced will be returning for another season with the club. “Salla is a world class player having won the last year’s MVP award and helping our team to its first championship. We are excited to have her return for another season,” said Wakefield.
The LMRL Thunder also announced today that Gino Pastro (Delta, BC) will be joining the team as an assistant coach, joining Wakefield (Langley), Bill Woodley (Richmond), Cathy Lipsett (Salmon Arm), and Dale Hannesson (Langley) who are all returning from last year’s championship team. “The addition of Gino Pastro to an already strong and professional bench staff demonstrates our club’s commitment to the development and support of our elite athletes,” said Wakefield. “Today is an exciting day for the LMRL Thunder with season almost upon us.”
The LMRL Thunder season opens with a Prospects Camp August 27 -30 in Vancouver. The full team reports September 7 for try outs, followed by a training weekend September 14-16 on Vancouver Island. All inquires can be directed to Chris Wakefield, Director/Head Coach at firstname.lastname@example.org.
