The Waterloo Wildfire of the National Ringette League kicked off their 2008-09 season with victories in Whitby on Saturday and in Richmond Hill on Sunday.
Saturday in Whitby the Wildfire buried the expansion Whitby Wild by a score of 21 -1. Co-captains, Lindsey Vivian, Amanda Somerville and Shelly Kraemer led the way with 5, 4 and 3 goals respectively as 9 players in total shared in the scoring. Tara Gross and Bryanna Kelly added 2 each, with singles going to Cathy Van Oosterhout, Brittany Wiebe, Jodie Hannen, Julie Mahy and Cass Findlater. Vivian also added 8 assists for a 13-point game. Lisa Malanka in the Wildfire cage stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced.
Sunday in Richmond Hill the Wildfire fell behind 3-1 after one period but outscored the Lightning 7 to 1 in the second and skated off with an 8-4 victory. Rookies Bryanna Kelly, with 3 goals and an assist, and Cass Findlater, with 2, paced the Wildfire attack in this one with single markers coming from Somerville, Hannen and Vivian, who also added an assist, for an amazing 15-point weekend.
The Wildfire are tied for first in the Eastern Conference Southern Ontario Division with the Cambridge Turbos who also defeated Richmond Hill and Whitby on the weekend. The two Waterloo Region rivals will battle each other in their next 2 games, Sunday at 12:30 at Hespeler Arena and at Moses Springer Arena Sat Nov 1 at 7:30 in the Wildfire’s home opener.
