On Sunday, February 9, 2017, the Rushies had the honour of meeting and receiving cooking lessons from Chopped Canada Junior Winner, Jonathan Giovannoni. After being diagnosed with brain cancer at age five, Jonathan began to spend more time at home, recovering, watching the Food Network and cooking with his father. (3) His passion for food shortly ensued.
“I was diagnosed with a brain tumour, so I couldn’t really play with kids my age,” he said. “So my dad started showing me how to cook pizzas and pastas, and ever since then I’ve had a passion for it. We would just spend our Sundays in the kitchen.”(1)
After winning Chopped Canada Junior, Jonathan matched and donated his $5,000 prize to the Make a Wish Foundation. The $10,000 will be used to make a sick child’s wish come true. (2)
The Rush enjoyed learning from the young, talented chef as he shared his love of cooking and discussed his time competing on the first season of Chopped Junior. With Jonathan’s help and guidance, the Rushies were able to prepare a delicious Italian meal from scratch, consisting of roasted baby potatoes, garden salad and bacon wrapped chicken stuffed with spinach and cheese.
The Rush is very thankful for the time they spent with Jonathan; learning how to make an incredible meal and hearing his truly inspiring story.
