Saturday evening at Waterloo’s RIM Park the Region’s two National Ringette League’s teams the Cambridge Turbos and Waterloo Wildfire hooked up in a unique four 15-minute period league game. Ringette Canada has asked each of the league’s 18 teams to play one match this season using this international format in preparation for next year’s World Ringette Championships since all team Canada players come from the NRL, including several from the two local clubs.
The first two periods were a see-saw affair with Cambridge taking an early one goal lead and the Wildfire coming back to taks a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. The Turbos counted the only two goals of the second to go into the intermission with a one goal lead.
A four goal outburst in the third period, two in the space of 39 seconds in the second last minute gave the Turbos a commanding 4 goal lead and after the teams traded 4th period markers, Cambridge went home with a 9-5 victory.
Sharolyn Wouters led the Cambridge attack with four goals while Jackie Gaudet and Christina Mascherin, each with a pair and Nadia Barey rounded out the Turbos scoring.
Co-captain Amanda Somerville paced the Wildfire with a hat trick while Tara Gross and Bryanna Kelly added singles.
Amanda Voisin and Lisa Malanka shared goaltending duties for Waterloo and stopped 45 of 54 shots fired their way while the Wildfire mustered only 29 shots against Meghan Pittaway in the Cambridge cage.
The Boston Pizza Wildfire player of the game as chosen by the players was Amanda Somerville.
