The Waterloo Wildfire of the National Ringette League today announced the signing and arrival in Waterloo of Finnish defence player, Susanna Saarela. “Suski”, as she’s known to her teammates on her Finnish elite league team, is “very excited to be in Canada and playing in the Canadian elite league”. Saarela was drafted in the third round of July’s NRL 2012 entry draft.
Saarela arrived Friday at Pearson International Airport in Toronto where she was greeted by Wildfire GM, Jim Thompson and his wife, Linda (Wildfire trainer). Susanna was tired and hungry after a long flight on Icelandic air from Tampere, Finland. After clearing Canadian customs, the Thompsons took her to their home for some toast and jam and a banana followed by a big night’s sleep. She spent the weekend checking out the sights in nearby Toronto and getting rid of her jet lag before arriving at her first skate on a Canadian ice pad at the Wildfire pre-season practice Tuesday in Waterloo where she was warmly welcomed by her new teammates.
Head coach, Doug Miners, was impressed with Saarela’s agility and strength and feels that “she will definitely help out the Wildfire defense”. Small wonder, she’s been on the ice in Finland since August!
Before playing in her first NRL game this coming Sunday, the Wildfire home opener at 6pm at RIM Pillers, she will participate in some team bonding as she and her new teammates enjoy some Oktoberfesting on Friday evening. Welcome to Waterloo, Susanna!
