The Waterloo NRL Wildfire of the Eastern Conference Southern Ontario Division took three of a possible four points this past weekend in two games with visiting teams from the Capital Division.
Saturday evening in Waterloo, co-captain, Amanda Somerville, led the Waterloo squad with two goals and an assist in a 4 to 3 victory over the Quebec City Cyclones. The Wildfire had built up a 4 to 1 lead early in the second half only to see Quebec close to one goal, resulting in a very exciting finish. Tara Gross and Jodie Hannen counted the other Waterloo goals while goalie Lisa Malanka stopped 23 of the 26 Cyclones shots.
Sunday morning’s game at the Hespeler Arena against the Gloucester Devils was even more exciting. The Wildfire scored early and late in this one with two first half goals by Gloucester sandwiched between, resulting in a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation time, earning each team one point. The win was decided by a shootout which went to 10 shooters before Gloucester emerged victorious. Twice during the shootout Gloucester took the lead only to have Wildfire co-captain, Shelly Kraemer, come back to tie it. However, after the 3rd Gloucester goal, Kraemer failed in her final attempt and the Devils took the extra point. Kraemer and Somerville counted the two Wildfire goals in regulation time.
The Wildfire return to action this coming weekend with a home game Saturday evening at 7:30 pm at Moses Springer Arena against the Whitby Wild and then travel to Richmond Hill Sunday morning for an 11:30 match with the Lightning.
