LL-89 defeat the defending champion Cambridge Turbos to move on to an all Finnish final against RNK

Turku, Finland – Saturday, December 31, 2011 – The defending world club champion Cambridge Turbos were denied a chance at repeat gold today when they were downed 3-1 by Lapinlahden Luistin -89 (LL-89) in the semi-finals. Emily Bakker (Mitchell) scored the lone goal for Cambridge, assisted by Jacqueline Gaudet (Cambridge), while goalie Meghan Pittaway (Cambridge) made 44 saves and earned game MVP honours for Cambridge. Anne Pohjola continued her scoring streak to pick up two goals for LL-89 and goalie Johanna Mikkonen made 29 saves to also receive game MVP honours. The Turbos will now move on to play Luvian Kiekko -82 (LuKi-82) for bronze tomorrow after that team was downed 5-4 in overtime by Raision Nuorisokiekko ry (RNK) in the other semi-final game today. Susanna Tapani scored four goals and an assist, including the game winning goal for RNK.…

Finnish teams continue to dominate at world club championship

Turku, Finland – Thursday, December 29, 2011 – Despite each posting wins over Sweden on day two of the 2011 world club championship, Richmond Hill Lightning and the Cambridge Turbos could not beats the Finns again today. The Lightning faced a 12-3 loss to Luvian Kiekko -82 (LuKi-82) and the Turbos were downed 5-2 by Raision Nuorisokiekko ry (RNK). Lapinlahden Luistin -89 (LL-89) are at the front of the Finnish pack, picking up a 9-3 win over LuKi-82 and a 9-6 win over RNK, which puts them at a 3-0 record and the only team undefeated. The Lightning and Turbos both stand at a 1-2 record going into the last day of round-robin play, while LuKi-82 and RNK are 2-1 and Sweden is 0-3.…

Ten Things I Think I Think - March 2012

I think that the Eastern playoffs were closer than they looked. This was especially the case in the two game sweeps in Southern Ontario. The Atlantic Attack gave the Richmond Hill Lightning all they could handle, especially in game two where Karen McWilliams scored with nine seconds to go, to clinch a spot at the national championships. In the other southern Ontario series, the Quebec City Cyclones gave the Cambridge Turbos a ton of trouble in game one, coming up only one goal short against the perennial powerhouse.…
