The opening month indicates clearly that the Western division is going to be highly competitive again this year. Our first series against the WAM was completely unpredictable, as the first game required a shootout, and the next two games were nearly blowouts, one going each way! Picking up 3 out of the possible 6 points against the WAM is a reasonably satisfactory first road trip of the season.
Our next series was at home against the RATH, also a great series, with each game pretty much to the wire. Two games went to shootouts, one each way. Another 3 points, and a decent showing against a strong opponent.
The most encouraging indicator in October was seeing that our goals per game average is up one full point over last year! (Thanks primarily to a very impressive month by Morgan Jones).
Each month, we would like to highlight some of our players, starting with Carrie Nash this month.
Carrie has just finished her 5th year of eligibility in the CIS for the University of Manitoba Bisons soccer team and is in her final year of school, in the Faculty of Science. As well as being a talented soccer and ringette player, she is also on the Canadian Bandy team (as are a few other Jets players), with whom she has travelled internationally, the next trip is to Russia in early 2012. If you have never seen Bandy, it’s played on skates, on an ice surface the size of a soccer field, the stick looks like a field hockey stick, and the net is HUGE (just ask goalie, Amy Clarkson!) Carrie sees her future involving more school, and / or travelling, as she really would like to see England.
Carrie is a strong offensive forward, and we have missed having her with us so far this season, as she had to complete her university soccer commitment. We look forward to having her back in the lineup as we head to Calgary in November. Last year in Calgary, we actually had a game with NO PENALTIES! (We sure haven’t seen anything like that this season!) Hopefully, we will see more wide open, fast paced ringette in our upcoming series.
